Cannabis use is increasing among older adults in Canada faster than in any other age group, according to the Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health (CCSMH).

Cannabis is legal in Canada, but that doesn’t mean it is risk-free. One common misconception is that cannabis isn’t addictive. In this two-minute video, Dr. James MacKillop explains cannabis use disorder, how problematic cannabis use can develop, and why some people become dependent on cannabis.

Among people who use cannabis, about one in 10 develop cannabis use disorder. The risk is higher among people who began using cannabis as teenagers and can be substantially higher among people who use cannabis every day.

Cannabis use disorder can involve symptoms such as:

  • Continued cannabis use despite negative consequences
  • Difficulty controlling or reducing use
  • Cravings
  • Spending significant time obtaining or using cannabis

This isn’t about being pro-cannabis or anti-cannabis. It’s about understanding the potential risks and having the information you need to make informed choices.

Discuss cannabis with your healthcare providers

Cannabis can interact with prescription medications, over-the-counter medications and other substances. If you use cannabis—or are considering using it—talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about potential interactions.

Substances and medications that may interact with cannabis include:

  • Sleeping pills and other sedatives
  • Some antidepressants
  • Some pain medications
  • Alcohol

This conversation is particularly important for older adults who may be taking several medications. Letting your healthcare providers know about your cannabis use gives them a more complete picture of your health and helps them provide safer, more effective care.
